Thanks for reading Scratch! Here you'll find some common questions and their answers. If all else fails, use our contact page.
How do I subscribe?
Welcome! Click here and choose a subscription tier.
I've already subscribed — how do I sign in?
Welcome back! You can sign in by clicking here. Just remember to use the same email address as before. (If you can't remember it, please contact us.)
Why is there a paywall?
Because writing is labor, and we live under capitalism, an economic model in which labor must be compensated with money in order for laborers to survive. A section of each post will always be free to read, however if you'd like to read the rest and/or comment...👇
How do I comment on posts?
In order to discourage bots and trolls, commenting privileges are reserved for paying subscribers. You can become one here.
Can I buy a gift subscription?
You are such a thoughtful and excellent gift-giver, and yes, you sure can! Buy a gift subscription here.
Do you have a tip jar?
Absolutely, it's right here.
Do paid subscriptions automatically renew?
Yes, but rest assured you will receive ample warning before renewal if you're on an annual plan.
What if I can’t afford to subscribe?
Our Unpaid Intern tier gets you access to a large chunk of the newsletter, but if you need to read the whole thing and you really, truly cannot afford it, email us at hi@talkscratch.com. We'll see what we can do.
What if I have a tech problem that’s not addressed here?
For problems with Scratch access or to report a bug, drop us a line at hi@talkscratch.com. This is not our only job, so we may take a few days to get back to you!
For tech issues not related to this website or newsletter, sorry, we cannot help you. Please ask a human who is at least ten years younger than us.
Do you accept pitches/submissions of articles?
No.
Who do I talk to about this scandalous or shocking publishing gossip I just found out about?
All hot tea/tips can be emailed to tips@talkscratch.com. We may investigate further. (No promises, though.)
Can I send you a press release/copy of my book/box of chocolates?
You can send press releases to media@talkscratch.com. Please don’t send us physical objects unless you know us or we ask you to. No, not even chocolate.
I work in book publicity. Where do I send ARCs?
First, please email and tell us about the title. If it's a fit, we’ll give you the mailing address for the Scratch correspondent who's interested in reading it. Our capacity for book coverage is somewhat limited, but we do want to read books (fiction and nonfiction) that overlap with our topical interests!
Can I support Scratch by making a tax-deductible donation?
Probably! Email us and we’ll figure it out.
I want to sponsor a post. Whom do I contact?
You can get in touch here, but be forewarned that we won't run anything that goes against our values or promotes AI.
What about a group subscription for my school/library/org?
Scratch does offer group subscriptions! However, they need to be added manually. Contact us here to get that set up with the subject line "Group Subscription."
Can I hire one of you/pitch one of you for something non-Scratch-related/give one of you a million-dollar book deal?
Sure, but you should probably do that through our personal websites, which you can find on our About Page.
Can you tell me how to get an agent/writing job/book deal/etc.?
No, we cannot. We can tell you how we got those things, and we can talk with other writers about how *they* got those things, and hopefully through this collective exchange of experience and wisdom we will all gain a new sense of solidarity and transparency that allows us to organize, agitate for, and build a just and more equitable power dynamic within communities and industries of letters. But no, we cannot tell you how to get an agent/writing job/book deal/etc.
How do I make money writing?
We do not know. Please tell us if you find out!
